9 Fall Break

Choose ONE thing you are looking forward to about break and expound upon it. Only ONE thing. For example, I am looking forward to my trip to Johannesburg, but ONE thing would be riding public transportation. Two things would be the airplane ride and the train or the train and a bus. Choose ONE. Only 300 words.  Have a great break by writing early.

  1. October Break has definitely been something I’ve been looking forward to ever since the second week of school after I found out how much homework I was going to get from my AP Biology class. Although I’m sure each of us will have something interesting to do this break and that we’re each looking forward to all the wonderful events that will occur, I’m mainly looking forward to eating pizza at Farah’s house.

For any of you who haven’t tasted Farah’s pizzas, let me start off by saying that they are quite addictive. They aren’t like the regular large-sized, eight-sliced pizzas; they’re mini pizzas. They’re always fresh, always moist, always tasty, and always available at her house. After having your first pizza you will always reach for one more on the full plate sitting right in front of you until it’s completely empty. Then, you would walk into the kitchen and stand by the oven waiting for Maman Francoise, Farah’s cook, to bring out twelve more fresh pizzas. One could literally spend their entire day standing there and watching each pizza come out of the oven, one after the other.

Each bite you take brings out the delectable flavor of the tomato sauce that has been spread on the baked pizza dough. The melted cheese adds on to the flavor but as well as to its moisture. And in the afternoon, when you’re ready to leave Farah’s house, your stomach is full and completely satisfied. You thank Francoise for the amazing pizzas she has made, you thank Farah for being a great host even though you completely ignored her presence and stayed focused on the pizzas, and you step into the elevator, go down to the first floor, walk to your car, and drive home with a smile on your face.

    1. Okay, now you need to get Farah to invite us all over for Francoise's pizza! I'm hungry. Will you go dancing at Roshni's to work it off?

  2. Just two more days of school, and the October break we’ve all eagerly been waiting for will finally arrive. The impatience and excitement has been running through me for a while now and I can’t wait for the bell to ring at 3 PM on Tuesday. Although the short break from school can finally allow me to sleep in, I still have to keep in mind the several college applications I need to work on. My only motivation to get out of bed on Monday and Tuesday is knowing that during this break, I’ll not only be able to sleep in, but be able to dance at Roshni’s Hindu festival, Navratri.

Every time I imagine the lights, colorful Indian outfits, and traditional dancing, a rush of excitement runs through me. If you were to be at this festival, you'd be amazed at the how the crowd in one hall can transfer an amazing vibe through music and dancing around the beautiful statue of God. This particular festival is known for a certain type of stick dance called Dhandia in which each person grabs hold of two wooden sticks, and once the music begins to play, they move around in a circle, swaying and banging their sticks against others who have formed similar circles in the middle. I must say getting dressed to attend this festival is really an exciting moment because I am able to showoff my beautiful traditional Indian outfit and sparkling jewelry while I dance away the entire night until my feet are aching and sore. I know you must be struggling, trying to play a video of the traditional dance in your mind, but I must say if you ever get a chance to be a part of this Hindu festival, it is one that you must not miss. I’ve got to admit, that my first attempt at Dhandia resulted in complete confusion and resentment to doing it again, however, I eventually got the hang of it. Now, whenever Roshni mentions Navratri, I’m ready to dance and sway to the Indian tunes in my lovely, colorful outfit.

  3. It’s sad that I had to start my fall break getting food poisoning, but that doesn’t change what I was looking forward to. Hopefully I’ll be well enough to play golf over the break and I’ll get to see my golf ball in the air.

Watching the ball in the air is something out of this world. Before hitting any golf shot my heart rate rises and that’s where the pressure comes in. Then when the ball is in flight, I feel the competitive desire in me. The ball spins, turns, and dips all over the place. All that is what makes me go back the next day to golf again.

To get a nice-looking ball with good flight, a player must play with concentration and grit. The club has to come down from the players swing and hit the bottom part of the ball for height. The ball from there, shoots of the ground with much spin and travels a certain distance. The higher it goes and the longer it stays in the air, the easier the ball can catch the wind and lose momentum. The lower the flight, the more roll the ball has and the higher the flight, the less roll the ball has.

It’s all about the perfect timing. Getting that ball quick enough in the air, having the right amount of spin and power, and controlling and manipulating the ball during its flight. You know something is wrong with your shot when you see your ball from a distance either draw to the left or fade to the right.

The trick to having a descent golf shot is keeping your cool while stroking the ball and at the same time thinking positively.

    1. I didn't realize that time in the air was a negative. The way you describe the joy of seeing an airborne ball is fairly vivid. Be careful with proofreading. Check your last sentence. Do you really want your perfect shot to have descent? What if it's too early?

  4. It has been always the same for me for every break we had – study for SAT. Now I really sound like a nerd, but I truly value the free time I am given to do something I want to. Simply, I do not want to waste my time.

I was thinking that I am getting very lazy these days. Last year, when I was preparing for SAT in January, I studied more than 5 hours a day. Honestly speaking, I did not get off my chair and desk. However, today, I am having too much confidence. During the October break, I will try to concentrate as much as I can and spend less time on nap and texting; I am looking forward for my studies.

In the morning, assuming that I will wake up at 9, I will start with learning vocabularies that I got wrong in my practice tests. Murmuring and repeating “retaliation”, “misgivings”, and “veracious”, I will wake up my brain. After that, I will write one essay, with time set - ready, steady, go! As a result, one complete essay would be done by 22 minutes. I will move on to practice test or to my reading workbook and continue studying until I feel like sleeping, which is about 12 o’clock at night. My day seems boring and tiring: it is all about studying. Yet, I believe it is very meaningful, because I know that my efforts will pay me off one day.

It is not a lie to say, “I hate studying.” I often wish to have some other talent that is not related to studying or academics. However, “I” chose to study and I know that “I” want to study more. These days I am realizing the famous phrase of Koreans, “Studying never ends: elementary years, start studying; middle schoolers, it is your time to study; high school students, must study now or else you will not be able to go to university; university students, start your new field of studying; 30s, continue studying; 40s and 50s, restart studying.”

    1. Interesting saying. it may be true, but it doesn't roll of the tongue in the English translation. Just a note, since you are focusing on vocabulary: "vocabularies" can only refer to the vocabulary of several different languages. For example, the vocabularies of Korean, English and French. I believe you are studying your English vocabulary. BTW, I also actually do enjoy studying things when I feel like I am progressing with the subject as a result. New knowledge or a new skill set excites most of us, I think.

  5. Whenever I come back from summer holidays I always think about the next break that follows, for another surf trip to Pointe Noire. I have been waiting for the fall break since the beginning of the school year now, just to be surfing again with my friends in the republic of Congo. Even though it has been two years that I left Pointe Noire, I always consider myself being a local surfer from there.

This time I decided to invite Andrea Teyssedre. He’s a surfer too and has never been to Pointe Noire, so I thought it would be fun to bring another surfer to show him the waves we got there. I would not say we have the best waves, but they are good enough to have amazing surf sessions.

Surfing is just the best sport I have ever tried in my life. I don’t think I can stop surfing unless you take off all my limbs, which I don’t really wish. Surfing is such a good feeling, more than a regular sport, it is a lifestyle. While some people prefer to sleep late and wake up late in the morning, I would rather sleep early and wake up around six o’clock in the morning not to miss nice waves, and a beautiful sun rise. Then I would surf from six Am to twelve am, eat then go back in the water for another five or six hour. You may be very exhausted and sore after a long surf session. Surfing can also be very distracting; when it comes to me I constantly think about the waves or about going to surf when I have a free time. That’s why I had to think twice before coming to Pointe Noire. With all my college applications and my homework that I have to do, I thought it would not be possible for me to make it. But after all I just posted this on the blog, so I think it’s already a good start.

    1. I miss surf, too. I agree with you - as do surfers everywhere - about that very special time just a sunrise when you paddle out in "virgin" waters for the first time that day. Pay special attention to the prompt, though. You wavered between your love of surfing, taking a friend, wanting to do college apps, your friends who sleep in, and how sore you get from long sessions. This is way more than ONE thing. Focus on one moment. See Salman's post about the desire to see the ball travel through the air (he also talks too much about peripheral things, but that moment is clear). You touch on it when you paddle out at sunrise (one word).

  7. Since I’m already past the deadline, I’ll talk about what I was looking forward to and what I actually ended up doing. One thing that I was really looking forward to over this break was how do I catch up with all the pending work? The night before the break I actually took my time to make a schedule on what I’m going to do and when I’m going to them. I was so happy after making my ‘schedule’. So happy that I went to my dad and forced him to listen to me recite my whole schedule. After showing it to him, he just looked at me and laughed which did make me mad. The first day went very well, and all other days I spent my time telling myself how I’m not betraying myself by not following, which I supposed was the ultimate schedule.
This for sure makes me sound like a procrastinator (which is not a complete lie) but I actually ended up getting some work done. This kind of work I’d never get done even if I was bribed with a billion dollars. At the end of the day I’m really proud of myself for getting quite far with my preparation for the Indian National Exam. This break was quite helpful, even though I didn't stick to the schedule I still got past the most boring chapters in physics according to me. I’m really grateful to this break, though it leaves me loathing for more.

    1. What do you mean by "loathing for more?" I, too, begin short breaks with the best of "catch up" intentions and rarely have complete follow through with them. This saddens me, but afterwards I usually figure I needed the break away from the work more. Ah, justification is sweet, no?

You pretty much stuck to one idea, but you did stray from it with your bit about the procrastination. Reread your sentence "This break was quite helpful, even though I didn't stick to the schedule I still got past the most boring chapters in physics according to me." Do you hear what is wrong with the way this is phrased? Proofread your work.

  8. I was really eager and excited about fall break, because of my expectations to get more sleep and to relax. During the whole week, I could not wait to finally, be off school and focus more on my college applications. This urgent need to go on a break was because I had so much work to do at school, and I felt overwhelmed by it. Thus, over the break I planned to work on my applications and rest at the same time. The strange thing is that, nothing went as I planned, and I ended up working and setting up for the haunted house instead. In that moment, I came to realize that being a senior is not exactly what it sounds like, because you basically have to work constantly especially in my case.
As a result, I did work as I intended to, but it was not only on college applications, I also worked for the haunted house as well. Although working on the haunted was not my priority, I still spent most of my time at school, working in the CAC cave with all the seniors. Afterward I began, looking forward to finish the haunted house, as the fall break was the only opportunity to do a big part of the work, Such as, putting up boards, painting them and decorating the cave. I came to school almost every day from ten to one, to get things done, which turned out to be fun and interesting. By the end of the break, the haunted house was done and I felt relieved because I had less work to worry about and to do. Working on the haunted house was a good experience, and I believe that, it was a good use of my time during the break.

  9. I'm glad you ended up having fun while working with your classmates on this project. Sometimes, more often than many of us realize, working on these friendships and relationships is more important than "getting work done." Cherish the time you have left to spend with these friends - who knows when you will see them again.

I like to way you change direction in the opening: from application work to haunted house work and then the way you stick to the haunted house throughout the rest of the piece. Good focus.

  10. During the fall break I have lots of fun stuff to do in mind! Although I’m going to be out with my friends most of the time, the ONE thing I’m particularly excited about is the fact that I have enough time on my hands to cook my all time favorite Indian dessert called Ras Malai. On Tuesday, a friend of ours from the Indian embassy is going to guide us through this amazing journey! I’m a food connoisseur as most of you know hence I’m always open to try all sorts of authentic goodies but sadly I’m not the greatest chef ever. I have trouble boiling eggs which should say a lot about my level of cooking. Ras Malai is a fairly simple recipe but extremely calorific. I’m not going to go on explaining the recipe and directions but the main ingredient is powdered milk, vinegar, and sugar. There’s a bit of science involved in the process as well which I find quite impressive. When adding a half a shot glass of vinegar to the boiling powered milk, the acidity in the vinegar forms a separation in the liquid and whatever is not liquid turns into a pasty white substance which is the birth/forming of Ras Malai! It’s presented in little balls soaked in sweetened powered milk and topped with sprinkles of all sorts of nuts and a few Indian spices such as “eliachi.” This spice just enhances the flavor all around. The best part about this savory dessert is the first bite of it. The way I see it is like a sponge. If it’s cooked right, you’ll be able to taste all the juices that get absorbed. Now that I think about it, the ONE thing I can’t wait to do is to finally eat it!

    1. I like the way you brought back the ONE idea and twisted it at the end. That helped tie your piece together well. The flavor sounds interesting - does the vinegar say bitter or does the sugar and the cooking sweeten it up a bit?

  11. From the first day that I walked in at school, I knew that I still needed a couple of days off because I really start working, and for the October Break I was definitely planning on taking my time to fully rest without having to worry about waking in the morning to go to school, or even to stay late at night doing my homework.
Even though nothing went the way that I assumed it will, because I ended up suffering from malaria which was so bad because I felt as if I was in atmosphere floating around, and that why because resting of I ended up having to go to the hospital on Thursday night until next week Tuesday morning. One of my other aim was to also gain some weight during the break , and that also did not go the way I wanted it to happen because at the end of the break I ended up losing 5 kilos, which is a lot for me to gain back now because I do not often like to eat that much.
Although no went the way I wanted it to be, but at the end I still ended up realizing that I at least took some time off school, and which also made me come late to school although the break was already over, but rather be sick and outside of school and still pretending to yourself that you are taking a break, instead of being at school and getting a tones of homework every day, which just makes you weak day by day.

  12. During my fall break I enjoyed doing nothing. While school is going on there are so many things to think about and worry about. Things that I need to do, things that I need to turn in, and things that I just need to remember. The thing I look forward to, probably the most, is the fact that I have a lot less things to think about, worry about, and remember during breaks away from school. The stress of senior year was nice to get away from for a while.

I really like sleeping in as long as I can without a care. It’s also nice to be able to stay up as late as I want without worrying about being tired the next day (because I can just sleep in). The internet is also a lot better in the middle of the night, so it’s nice to be able to use it then. It isn’t always possible to totally escape all the worries from school and the rest of life, but it’s a lot easier to relax when you don’t get new things to worry about every hour of the day (while at school).

Since I didn’t travel anywhere over the break I had plenty of time to do what I was looking forward to. It was great to waste time, sleep in, watch movies/shows, and play games. The only drawback from all that relaxing is the fact that I didn’t get much of any work done. But life is not perfect, and you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do. I can be productive when we don’t have a break, I need to use all the time I can get to be lazy while I still can. With college coming up who knows how much time I’ll have for laziness in the future.

BTW, I think you'll find college, with it's very few class hours, will allow you more down time than high school affords as you are incarcerated for 8 hours each day in hs and only about 3 hours in college.:)

  13. October break was something that I was waiting for since the second week of school. I was looking forward to relax with my friends but this October break was just special. I was looking more forward my parents’ 2Oth wedding anniversary. It was just awesome, what else can I say. It was a busy day but it was great at the end. My task was to make sure that all the tables were well done and the music was ready to play. Everything was going okay until the Dj came to tell me that his computer had a problem and he can’t play the music 30 minutes before the party start. I was stressing and I didn’t want to go tell my mom because she was going to start panicking .I was trying to find a solution by myself but I couldn’t. I told my uncle and I asked him if we could use his computer and he said yes. It was stressful to organize it but we all made it. I enjoyed the night with my big family, the party was great and everyone was shining and beautiful. My brothers and I wrote a speech and I’m the one who read it. I was so stressed but after people put hands together for me and they liked the speech. I have never seen my mom dance like that night, she was just so happy and it made all of us happy too. Yes, it is not an easy journey to be married for 20 years. This is the highlight of my break, even if I ended up with work to do on Sunday, it was simply amazing.

  14. Though Fall Break was weeks ago, I do remember looking forward to finally having a break from school and being able to focus on my college applications. As I found it hard to equally divide my attention between school work and college applications, and it worried me that one of them could possibly be neglected. A situation that could either result in poor grades or not getting into a college. Neither of which I was ready for. With so much at stake, the up coming break was also my chance to get organized, to plan for future essays, projects and application deadlines. In hopes of finally getting the upper hand on my overwhelming situation.
Sadly, my break did not go as planned, to my surprise it turned out to be busier then my average school week. As a senior I found myself bombarded with new responsibilities, due to the senior organized event, Haunted House. Those responsibilities combined with my responsibilities as a student and as a college applicant, resulted in me being less organized then before the break. The days went by in a flash, bringing me closer to my college deadlines. Deadlines that I could not afford to miss, but which I would have to spare time for, in what looks like the beginning of a hectic couple months.

  15. Although I am pretty late at this, I do recall anxiously waiting for the break and being able to finish all the pending work I had. College applications, essays, AP work, plus a research paper for African Studies completely stressed me out. I decided that I would do all my work within this break and have a breath of relief but like usual I ended not doing everything I was supposed to do. Instead of the work, I went to the Hindu Temple for Navratri (Hindu Festival) and had an amazing time out there. Before that as a responsible senior, I went to the preparation of Haunted House and spent almost 2 days there. Although it seemed like I could have done something things in that period of time, the bonding with the class and arranging everything was fun and productive. The Sunday right before the break ended I did all my AP work and college stuff. To me this break was quite helpful and reliving from the school and pressure seniors had. Since we started school, all the seniors were so stressed and worried about the college applications that they did not even spend a day without thinking or working on it. The October Break was a good time to finish most of the work and have a great time.

    1. You are responding to two ideas, not one. You talk equally about what you hoped to do (work, work, work) and what you ended up doing (chilling out and bonding with friends). Choose ONE and elaborate. That said, I'm glad you had a chance to chill out and that you did spend precious time with friends. Sometimes that's what really does matter.

  16. I was wondering when was October Break the first day of school. And here we are already back to school, it was so short. I just had time to sleep and eat all day that I was almost time to go back to school. Seniors worked hard during October break though, seating the haunted house was a lot of work. Walking to the soccer field a Friday morning with Poya and Jennifer trying to find leaves is something I will never redo. I got bitten buy those crazy black bugs a thousand times, while Jennifer wanted to take pictures in the plants. If you hang out with Jennifer be ready to take ten pictures of you and fifty pictures of her. You cannot even be mad at her because she is photogenic so after all you enjoy taking pictures of her. Besides taking pictures we were somehow productive; we putted a lot of effort in this project. The next week end was finally Haunted House and after 10 groups mostly everything was destroyed. We were really upset but we continued to work and gain money for our prom. It was a great experience because I think the haunted house gather us together. I am not saying we are a strong and unite senior class yet but we are on the good path. Even if our senior meetings are chaotic after all I love the fact that we always come up with different ideas and this is what makes our senior class different than the previous one. After all I spent a nice October Break but I wish it was longer, we are all now waiting for Thanksgiving break then December Break.

  17. Ohhh, all I needed was a break, a break from studying, doing my homework, tests, activities, due dates, projects the list goes on and on but, in short I really needed a break from school. As we all know being a senior is not an easy task, with it comes many responsibilities, a lot of pressure and a lot of work. Every day since school had started, I became a very very busy woman. I had no time at all, no time for myself, for my friends and neither had time for my family members. I was fully occupied with so much work given to me by, the teacher from my AP classes; I was so tensed and was just about to get crazy, but then the only thing that pulled me out form all the stress and tension was the Break. I was so extremely happy, a break was the one and only thing I desired and craved for. A day before the break commenced, I told everybody including my family members not to disturb me during the break. All I wanted to do during that time was to sleep. And yes, that’s what I did, the entire break, seven days I slept like an animal during hibernation. I just loved it and wished it could never end. The only time I got out of my bedroom was to have lunch and dinner that’s it, that’s how I spent my entire break and I just loved it.
