Due Wednesday, 21NOV

Take this as you take it. Everything you can tie to the subject is legal (but keep it family friendly, please).
Cat or Dog? 300 words. Go.

  1. The first thing that comes to mind is my all-time favorite childhood cartoon called “Cat Dog.” It’s an American animation, depicting the life of conjoined brothers, who take the shape of a hot dog except, one half being a cat and the other a dog and no tail or hind legs.
Cat is the more wise and sagacious one of the two. He’s the type who uses his intelligence against dog by creating intricate plans to achieve what he wants. Sometimes he tries so hard that his schemes never seem to push through and just blow up in front of him. With all this planning and stress, he tends to be short tempered and lets his anger out on his brother, Dog. Cat hopes for fame and fortune and will sometimes use Dog to obtain it. I recall watching an episode where there was a sledding competition and a huge prize was given to the winner. Cat is obviously not the sportive one of the two hence, with his manipulative personality he lured dog into participating in the competition and made sure they trained religiously. Cat’s use of satire is what makes this series so entertaining. For example when Dog says “Hi Ho Diggety” Cat replies “No Ho diggety!” This is usually said when something bad occurs. Dog is everything Cat isn’t, which is clumsy, gullible (he’s really ambitious and persuaded into doing things Cat or other characters tell him to do). I personally prefer Dog due to his free going personality. I would say I’m a lot like Dog in that sense! We just dive into everything with full energy, have short attention spans, and are food connoisseurs. The plot is quite ironic given the fact that they are polar opposites yet they still have to do everything together.

  2. Reading this blog title, I am convinced it’s asking which is better, “Dog or Cat”? In general, I’m not a fan of either dogs or cats. I prefer much larger animals such as horses, rhinos, and elephants. If I were forced to pick between a dog and a cat I would go for a dog. I’m not picking the dog because of the famous saying, “mans best friend”, but because I feel I would rather be bored with a dog than with a cat.

Pretend being stuck at home in Kinshasa for five days because rebels are shooting for fun. Wouldn’t you rather chill with a dog? Dogs, overall, are a lot more fun to hang with. You can throw a Frisbee and I can almost guarantee the dog will get it. If it were the cat, he or she would just watch the Frisbee fly away.

From what I’ve seen, dogs learn faster. Cats are like wild animals. They go where they choose to; they invade neighbors; they pretty much do whatever they want whenever they want. Although I’m amazed by how high cats can fall from, I still believe they are boring animals. Dogs reflect my personality. They are loud at times and love to bugs cats except; in my case it’s girls.

In my 17 years in the world I’ve rarely seen people attached to their cats. Cats don’t bring as much love to people as dogs do. I don’t like dogs because I get to close and have a hard time letting go. If I ever get a dog, it will be the German Shepard people use on TV for crime investigations. The dogs don’t only look boss, but they can run lightning fast.

  3. A dog is said to be a man’s best friend, it is fun to be around, very gentle when tame and knows its owners voice and scent. Like any other animal, having a dog has its cons like having to clean after it, remembering to feed it, taking it for a walk and so on. There are many types of dogs, with many purposes and abilities. Dogs do not only have one mate, they mate with any female dog around if they feel like it. Now do not lie to me, that doesn’t that sound like a man you know? Nowadays men are always compared to be like dogs, especially when they do bad things, and let me show you how. A man can be a very good friend, fun to be around very gentle when raised right and recognizes important voices and scents. Like a dog, for some men one has to pick up after him, cook for him, remind him to work out and so on. There are many different kinds of men with many abilities and purposes too. Unlike dogs, man can sometimes commit to having only one mate, but not all men, which then makes that man a dog. Does a man compared to a dog seem degrading to men or is it ok depending on the type of dog the man is? Both dogs and men can be a great thing to have in one’s life no matter what type of dog or men it may be. I think a that woman was made to be able deal with any kind of man or dog and tame or take care of any no matter the circumstances. In a very big way, the dog and man give women a sense of protection, security, and love which then makes their relationship dependent on each other in every way possible.

    1. While your analogy is clever and quick, I'm glad you ended on a sweet note. It would sadden me if you didn't like anything about men.

  5. Cats or dogs, which one is better? Which one do people prefer most? I believe this the most frequently asked question. Which one do I prefer? The answer is none, I hate animals, but still if I were to choose between the two in order to save my life,it would definitely be cats.

The cartoon Tom and Jerry makes me choose cats over dogs. The reason behind it is simply that Tom is much cooler than the dog in Tom and Jerry. Every time I see Tom I have a smile on my face, I cherish his stupidity. However, in real life, cats are cunning and can strangle you, but that is not a problem for me because I am never ever getting a cat or a dog. I grew up watching Tom and Jerry and every time I saw Tom, I was curious to see what his next move would be, whereas the bulldog in the cartoon always did the same old thing. Tom and Jerry is the only reason I can think of in order to praise cats. Otherwise, I believe animals are evil, you never know when they will attack. In addition, it takes a lot of time, patience, and money in order to maintain pets. Not to sound offensive, but I would rather spend my money on something else. The bottom line is I dislike both cats and dogs but if a gun is put to my head to make me choose, I would choose cats all thanks to Tom and Jerry. Still cats are naturally evil and so are dogs.

    1. Okay, you don't get to have your own animal family members, but if you do become a physician, remember that having pets often helps to cure people much faster, and among terminal patients, pets are the highest ranked "quality of life" improvement they cite. How can you not love puppy eyes?

  6. Cats. Definitely cats. For sure. Yes. No doubt. Any day. Anytime. Their enthused playfulness and independent nature is what makes them so lovable, cute, and fun to play with. My number one reason for why I’d pick cats over dogs any day? The smell. Now this may sound completely foolish but, I am a very particular and fussy person when it comes to smell and odor. For example: A dog has a foul odor. Number one instinct, wash the dog. But when it comes down to it, even all of the scented shampoos in the world can't fully remove this odor. Think about it. No one even needs to ask if you have a dog; their noses confirm it. On the other hand, cats, with their constant self-grooming release no such smell. If your cat rests on the new couch when you're not home, you'll probably never even know.

Cats are more polite than dogs. For example, when you invite guests over, a dog immediately begins barking and pawing at the newcomer. While the dog does everything possible to seek attention, the cat is usually nowhere to be seen. Cats choose to observe new arrivals from a distance. Maybe, if the cat is in the mood, she'll come out to greet this newcomer with a tail twitch. But that's it. No enthusiastic greetings, no jumping on laps, no humping of legs.

Lets face it. Cats are calmer than dogs. Dogs always tend to express their moods. Whether they are upset, happy, or excited, dogs bark. They loudly announce every news event, from a stranger at the door to a new bone. On the other hand, cats keep to themselves. Even their meows and occasional hisses can’t compete with the noises dogs create. I’m pretty sure you’ll never receive a complaint call from your neighbors because your cats’ hissing was keeping them awake.

The discussion on cats versus dogs is a long debate that rages on and everyone has their own reasons and preferences. But in the end, we cat lovers know that our sweethearts swept to victory long ago.

    1. Strong voice in this post. I can tell which way your passions flow. I love both, but prefer the aroma of dog skin oil to cat litter box.:)

  7. Cat or dog? Although this can take us into so many different directions, I’ll try my best to stick to one topic. We are all obviously familiar with the two animals; however, can we relate them to our personalities? Let’s go through the basics first. We’ll start with man’s best-friend: Always friendly, loud, often aggressive, playful, outgoing, vicious at times, affectionate, protective, vigilant, smart, alert, but overall, loving. Let’s move on to cats: Slick, fluffy, sassy, classy, cocky, moody, shy, placid, serene, at ease; Don’t be fooled, these creatures can get aggressive. The same words can be used to describe individual personalities or groups of individuals.

The typical, spoiled, female teenager: Always gets what she wants, always bosses people around, moody when her desires aren’t fulfilled, and extremely over confident. She is always treated like a queen, she always thinks the world revolves around her, and she assumes that she is better than everyone. Yes my fellow peers, this is an example of a cat personality. Don’t get me wrong. These people have a side that is extremely caring. They just don’t show it too much unless it’s necessary.

The senior class’s valedictorian: Because she is so outgoing and friendly, she seizes every opportunity, therefore, putting her in a better position than the cat. These people are caring and affectionate towards their loved ones. Don’t be fooled by these ones either, although they may seem like nerds, they’re the same drinkers you find in night clubs.

All I’m trying to say is: Let’s be dogs! We will be successful, surrounded by the right people, and always reaching our goals. I’m not saying dogs are better animals, I’m just saying we can use their personalities to improve ours. I can guarantee that by “acting like a dog” you will be in a better position than by being a cat.

  8. Cat OR dog? Are cats better OR dogs? Cats are more polite than dogs? Cats are calmer than dogs? Regardless of what a cat or dog’s character or nature is, I hate them both, but if I was to pick I’d go for a cat. Not that I have something against dogs but just that I am too scared of them. They are many different types of dogs; calm, angry, moody, sweet, aggressive, impolite, or mischievous. But on the other hand, cats may have all these characteristics or not, however they don’t tend to show it all the time. Cats are more likely to be on their own whereas dogs always seem to show to their excitement and adore being around people. Cats have their own private space even though they sometimes have a tendency to show their mood or presence. Dogs have to be dependent on someone, starting from giving them a bath to taking care of them to cleaning your house after they’ve roamed around. Cats are more independent and seem to take pretty good care of themselves regardless of where they habituated. By saying this I am not trying to take either side, I just hate animals and never had or wish to have pets in my house. They can get very aggressive and time-consuming which many of us can’t commit to. Whether it be a cat, dog, turtle or any other animal I prefer keeping them out of the house. Not that I am being an “animal hater” but the further they are the better they act.

    1. This is so very sad. Did something very frightening happen to you at a very young age to make you so terrified of furry friends? Interesting objective description of both, though.

  9. Dogs are my favorite if you ask me to pick me. They are clever, loving, caring with their masters and play an important role in their master’s life. However, people who dislike or do not have dogs think that they are a pain and that you always have to clean up after them. As a dog owner let me start by telling you that, when you own a pet, it is, important that you tame it patiently and accord to how you want it to behave. For instance, when you tame your dog not to mess up in the house it will get use to do it outside in the garden or in another suitable place. Dogs have several talents and qualities that make them special and unique. Dogs have the ability to understand everything you tell them in any language you use to communicate as they learn easily and quickly. They know to recognize their master’s voice, scent, and personal objects. Dogs know how to express themselves, when they sense some danger they bark aggressively to get their master’s attention. In fact, a well-tamed dog behaves similarly like a human being, in the sense that it shares some characteristics that humans have. Dogs tend to be jealous, overprotective, friendly, attentive, clever, and most importantly very faithful to their masters. Another behavior of dogs that is similar to humans is that, female dogs have a menstruation cycle just like every woman. In my case, my dogs have always had the talents and qualities I introduced previously. I love their company and I have a strong relationship with them. I treat my dogs like human beings and they treat me as if I was the best person on earth. Overall, dogs are extremely adorable, especially those who are tamed to be inside the house. I think dogs are the best pets in the world.

    1. I agree wholeheartedly, but have come to enjoy cat company as well. I am heartened to have at some of you enjoy your relationships with animals, too. You mention languages and messages: I have a friend who is a sign language interpreter and his dog responds to sign language commands - even to "please close the door!"

  10. If I were to reborn and have a chance to choose between cat or dog, I would definitely choose to be a cat. Ask me why? First of all, I love the cats’ freedom; Cats do whatever they want to do, they go wherever they want to go, and they do not follow the orders that their masters give. Also, their beautiful body shape and big round eyes are so attracting and tempting. When the cats meow, which some people find creepy, I find cats to be very cute and adorable. Cat’s egotistical behavior is one that I love about cats too. They do not care about anyone else but themselves and this makes them look elegant and proud. I love dogs too, but I prefer cats more than dogs if I were to born as one of them.
Cats do whatever they want to do. Except for some cats who listens to their master, most of the cats do not act like dogs, which follows and obeys their master. I want to live a life like those of cats: spending my afternoon sleeping on the couch, having a walk outside by myself, jumping around to catch some birds. Rather than people telling me what to do. For example, throwing a tennis ball, and telling me, “Marty, catch!” I would just climb up a tree and watch down what the scene looks like and think, “What are these fools doing? Catching a tennis ball every time knowing that he’s going to throw it again?”
Pointy little ears, big round eyes and furry tails that cats have are so attractive. They resemble a beautiful woman, I believe. Especially, all-black and all-white cats are the ones that I would like to be. When their eyes shine in the dark, that is the moment when the cats show their beauty. If I were a cat, I would walk around at night with my eyes brightly shining and my tail elegantly swinging.
Freedom, beauty and ego is what cats have and they are the reasons why I want to be a cat rather than a dog if I were to reborn.

    1. Interesting angle. I would like to point out that my plays fetch quite well. She also catches things in mid air, and does not go outside without a babysitter. But I do like your perspective.

  11. What do I know about dogs and cats? My dad is allergic to both so I have never had either as a pet for very long. My family tried having an “out side” cat a few times but that never worked out very well. The cats never were really nice, and always wandered off and got lost, and one was actually stolen. We dog sat a few dogs but never kept them for very long. So my view of dogs and cats is mainly from the ones that my friends have or that I’ve seen on movies and shows.

JD (Frances) has both dogs and cats and I’ve spent some time around his house and judging from his pets I like cats a lot better. His cats just hang around the house, and sometimes come up to you expecting you to pet them, which I don’t mind. But his dogs are a lot more annoying, they run up to you every time you are outside and lick and smell you. You have to knee them in the face in order to just get from one place to the next.

In several movies and shows I have also seen dogs and cats. At the moment I can’t think of any movie with a cat in it that I like. But I can think of plenty of dogs I like such as: Courage the Cowardly Dog, Snoopy, and Scooby Doo. “Man’s best friend” is a pretty popular saying and the dogs in movies and shows reflect it, but I find it deceiving. Even the movie “Cats and Dogs” is bias against cats.

Speaking again from my little knowledge of this subject I see dogs as extroverts who seem to have way too much energy and run around wanting your attention all the time. Cats on the other hand are much more like introverts who tend to keep to themselves which I can relate to. I may not be as introverted as some people but I can still clearly relate to cats better than dogs. I would much rather have a cat sitting calmly next to me than have a wild dog licking my foot all day.

  12. What about your current little ball of white fur? He's been with you for months....I like the way you analyze movie takes on both. Here's a question: the dog will lick you, but the cat claws and scratches. Ever been licked by a cat? it's sort of creepy. But I do still love my cat.

  13. Cat or Dog? I do not like both. Well actually I do love dogs but small ones the ones that cannot bite you, jump on you or things like that. I do not like cat at all. The fur they have I always sneeze after I touch them. I like water animals better: dolphins, whales, sharks. When I think about cat or dog, I directly think of a house. In most American and European families you will see the father, the mother, the two kids and the lovely dog or cat posing. It is funny how cats and dogs are part of family. In the US you even find animal cemetery. Thinking about cats and dogs, I remember the story of that woman who married a dolphin. There is of course no purpose of marrying an animal but she did. Everything is made so that they can be the queen or king. Clothes, relaxing massages, pedicures are made especially for dogs and cats and also beauty contests. So dogs or cats I would have a dog better but only when he is small.

    1. You like sharks, huh? Would you want one as a pet? or to swim with one? They really freak me out. Something about their very "dead" eyes. I do like swimming with dolphins, but the only time I've been really close to a humpback whale I was in a 6 man canoe and he was SO BIG we were freaking out trying to paddle fast enough to get out of his way.

  14. Dog or Cat? Hum the first thing that comes in my mind is to choose between cat and dog. I am not really an animal lover so if you ask to choose I will definitely say none. Dogs are said to be man’s best friend but I still don’t know how. They are just animals and how can a human be friend with an animal? Can you go talk to a dog and ask for advice? Can you go out with a dog? Can you ask a service to a dog? Impossible for me, it is just too many responsibilities. I just don’t understand how people prefer having dogs or cats in a house instead of having children. Yes, you can have pets but pets are not going to help you when you will get older and a person need to have at least offspring and pets are not ones. I understand that cultures differ from a country to another but in Africa people are going to make fun of you if don’t have children. People are going to start calling you “dog’s dad or mom». Personally I just can’t have a pet because I can’t handle being around animals but I am aware that one of my kids will ask for a dog or a cat in the future. Then I will have to handle it because you know how kids are when they get what they want. I found it funny how people give so much interest to dogs and cats today.

    1. If you don't like pets in your house, what makes you so sure your children will want them? There is a good chance that they will be more like you than the people who like furry friends. I do know that one of the reasons I have always had pets in the home is just that I don't have any family, so you may be right on that count. Oh, BTW, just want to make sure that you do know many dogs, in particular are service animals for the deaf, blind, AIDS patients, and physically challenged- so they can do service.

Why can't you handle being around animals?

  15. I grew up with a dog, but I currently have a cat that has traveled with us to our past 3 countries of residence. So I really do like both cats and dogs, but if I had to choose, I would pick a cat.
Cats require less attention and care then dogs, it is just a fact. Though I love the often excited and always loyal nature of dogs. I don’t like the way they smell, their loud barks, and all the attention they require regardless of your busy schedule. Dogs must be walked, washed, and played with regularly, and honestly I am just too tired to do either of those things after a long day. Especially when the chances of you staying clean at the end, are slim to none. Cats on the other hand, groom themselves, and only require attention from time to time. Like dogs however, owning a cat does have its drawbacks. Like if you own a cat that lives indoors, you have to change and clean its litter box, which is a less then pleasant experience.
All in all dogs and cats are very different, and because of my lifestyle having a cat is more convenient. Though it’s possible that when I am older, and settled down with kids, I might be more interested in having a fun loving animal, like a dog.

  16. You speak very thoughtfully and clearly about your preferences. And I agree with you about cats being a bit easier to take care of- most of the time. My kitten actually got stuck in a tree tonight and I had to get a ladder to help him down. I've never had a dog do this.:)
